Campaign for Real Ale

Midweek Social to Paignton - 21st June 2023

On a warm, sunny, summer solstice day, some of us elected to have a breakfast in The Talk of the Town where as usual a good selection of real ales was available: Ruddles Best, Doom Bar, Topsail, Abbot Ale, Brains SA, Hop Union Moose River and Jail Ale.
Eventually about 13 of us met up in Henry's Bar just after midday . Henry's Bar was offering the usual two versions of Doom Bar plus Teignworthy Thirsty Blonde and Exmoor Stag. There was also a real cider, Sam's Traditional Medium on a hand pump.
Next stop was The Spinning Wheel where only Devon Dumpling was available so we soon moved on to the Inn on the Green. This is a little unusual being a Marston's pub, offering something a little unusual for South Devon i.e. Banks's Amber Bitter and Courage Directors. Both proved to be popular.
After two pubs on the 'prom' it was decided to move inland and we had a pleasant stroll through Victoria Park to the Crafty Isaac Merritt, no longer a Wetherspoon outlet, but still looking rather like one. There was an interesting range of real ales available here: Pedigree, Landlord, Jail Ale, Old Speckled Hen, London Pride and Abbot Ale. It was good to see a selection of traditional ales!
Our final call of the day was the always popular Torbay Inn. Having started with a Good Beer Guide entry, we decided to finish with one. Beers enjoyed here were Tribute, Legend, Sharp's Sea Fury and Wye Valley HPA, the latter proving to be a popular choice
Our thanks to our Social Secretary, Lawrence, for organising the day, we look forward to the next one.
