The Vigilance We met up in the Vigilance so that those who wanted it could have breakfast and then we could sample the beer festival beers, of which there were five available. Adnams Cucumelon Sour and Burning Sky Clear Spot proved popular..
Our next stop was the Golden Lion. We have discovered that this was the venue for the branch's very first meeting on the 9th July 1975. That makes this year our 50th anniversary, so we will be celebrating and holding our November meeting at the Golden Lion. Jail and Tribute were the choices here.
We retraced our steps to visit the Birdcage next where 6X and Wainwrights Gold were on offer.
Our next call was at the other end of Fore Street, the New Quay Inn, where there were three beers available London Pride, Jail Ale and Black Stuff from Firebrand, a 5% stout, brewed in Launceston, Cornwall. This was a new beer to many of us and by the end of the day was voted by many as the 'Beer of the Day'.
Next was just round the corner, the Blue Anchor. This had changed hands since our last visit and was offering Jail Ale, Doom Bar and Morland Old Speckled Hen (now brewed in Bury St Edmunds), the latter proving popular.
After that the next pub was again just round the corner, the Buller's Arms where Jail Ale was the only option.
Next, just across the road, was the Old Market House, a large two storey St. Austell pub. The choices here were Tribute, Jail Ale and an Otter beer (Otter Bitter?) rebadged as Ship's Bitter. Here we took the option to sit upstairs and enjoy the views over Brixham Harbour.
From here the group started to disintegrate with some going on to the Crown & Anchor and the Sprat & Mackerel, some making the climb to the Queen's Arms and some heading home due to the lack of later buses.
Another enjoyable day, our thanks to the licensees for making us welcome.
