Midweek Social - No7 Bus & Totnes
The starting point was the Two Mile Oak situated on a crossroads on the A381 between Newton Abbot and Ipplepen. Consequently members appeared from all directions to gather by about 11am.
The first job of the day was to present the Good Beer Guide pack, then we had about an hour to enjoy the beers - Otter Bitter, Dragon's Breath and Jail Ale. The pub has a comfortable bar where the ales are dispensed by gravity straight from the casks behind the bar.
All too soon it was time to move on and catch the next No7 bus to take us to the Littlehempstead turn where a choice of two pubs faced us. We decided to do the furthest away first and so set off down the lane to Littlehempstead. On arrival at the Tally Ho, another 2024GBG entry, we found Mike & Kelly behind the bar. Mike & Kelly have been licensees here for a few years but have just recently bought the freehold - well done and good luck to them!. Beers on offer were, as usual, in excellent condition - Crossed Anchors Workmans Mild, Dartmoor Legend and Copperhead Pale Rider. Copperhead is a new brewery in Newton Abbot.
Having stayed longer than we intended we trudged back up the lane to the Pig & Whistle, a large dining pub. However there are usually three beers available, although today there were only two - Jail Ale & Topsail
Our next bus took us into Totnes where the Watermans was selected as our first call. This pub is popular with members - the beer is usually good and it's hidden away off the main street. One beer is usually on gravity, today there was Jail Ale and two from Hanlons: Firefly and Devon Darkness. It must be getting towards Christmas with these dark beers appearing!
A special request took us to the Steam Packet next, a large riverside pub with lots of outside seating. Here we sat outside basking in the late afternoon sun; well it wasn't raining! and had a choice of Jail Ale (again!), Doom Bar and Exeter Brewery's Avocet.
This was to be our last call, members started heading off to catch homeward buses and trains, although I suspect one or two might have found their way to the Albert.....
